Phoenix Rising FC has added veteran free agent Jordan Stewart, most recently of Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes. Stewart is a six-foot, left-sided defender who has played with the former Arizona United on loan.
Originally from Birmingham, England, Stewart has played for teams across the Football League, as well as with Leicester City and Watford during stints in the Premier League. He signed with the Earthquakes in 2013.
Arizona United allowed 46 goals in 2016, good for third-worst in USL’s Western Conference. A veteran presence on the back line could be useful in reducing that number this season. However, it remains to be seen if Stewart, who turns 35 next month, has what it takes to contain the multitude of speedy, young wingers he will face in the USL.
What do you think of this move? Is Stewart a starter, or does he provide depth? Let us know in the comments!
