FC Arizona’s first match of the NPSL season is in the books, as they played to a scoreless draw against fellow expansion club Orange County FC at John D. Riggs Stadium in Mesa.
FC Arizona pressed early on and had a few good opportunities in the first half. A hair-raising moment came in the 25th minute when a clever attack saw Alejandro Aguilar’s shot miss the target by inches and hit the crossbar. A minute later, a chip shot saw the crossbar save OCFC a second time.
Neither side dominated the game as both teams took turns testing the keepers.
In the second half FC Arizona was determined to score, overrunning the Orange County defense and sending multiple shot into the box. The home side subbed in Chris Sanchez in the 61st minute to add fresh legs to the offense, hoping to change the tide in their favor.
FCA’s moment almost came in the 83rd minute when a Kenny McAvoy shot nearly broke through, but it wasn’t to be.
FC Arizona play Oxnard Guerreros FC next Saturday, March 18th, at John D. Riggs.
