Phoenix Rising FC completes its three-match USL road trip Tuesday night as it travels to face Oklahoma City Energy FC at Taft Stadium.
This is the second time in the last month that Phoenix Rising and Energy FC are meeting. The last time these two teams met, Phoenix Rising FC’s Shaun Wright-Phillips sent Jimmy Nielsen’s squad home empty-handed with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in Scottsdale on May 13.
Phoenix Rising is 1-1 on this recent road trip losing 1-0 at San Antonio on May 20, but grabbing a 2-1 win May 27 at LA Galaxy II with goals from midfielders Eric Avila and Jason Johnson.
Phoenix Rising is coming off a 2-1 loss to the NASL’s San Francisco Deltas in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. An 85th minute penalty goal from Omar Bravo was not enough, as Tommy Heinemann scored in stoppage time to send the Deltas through to the fourth round.
Tuesday’s match will mark the finale of Rick Schantz as the interim manager, taking over Apr. 24 when Frank Yallop resigned to be with his family in Northern California. Schantz is 2-2 in league play and 2-3 overall as the coach since the takeover.
OKC have lost just once in five total matches since the loss May 13, but snagged two wins in Open Cup play, and are 4-1-0 across all competitions at Taft Stadium this year. Phoenix Rising FC is 1-2 on the road.
Hugh Alexander Dixon leads the team with two goals on the season, and Miguel Gonzalez leads with two assists. Cody Laurendi has been int he net for all of OKC’s matches this season, giving up 12 goals in nine matches this season.
