Phoenix Rising FC defender Amadou Dia did not take long to make his name known among supporters. Dia, who had been working out with the team, celebrated his 24th birthday on Thursday, was officially signed on Friday, assisted in Didier Drogba’s opening goal on Saturday against the Vancouver Whitecaps 2, and today was named to the USL Team of the Week. The Frenchman, who was a surprise start in the left-back position, completed 79.3% of his passes on 29 touches and was 11-3 on duels won/lost in capturing the league-wide honor.
Dia comes to Phoenix after finishing his sophomore season as a professional with the MLS Montreal Impact. He was drafted from Clemson University by Sporting Kansas City in 2015.
Rising FC Forward Didier Drogba was named to the USL Player of the Week Bench for his strong performance in the game, which included a goal and an assist.
