Sporting KC takes down Phoenix Rising 2-1 in Mobile Mini Sun Cup

Two late first half goals propelled Sporting Kansas City to a 2-1 victory Saturday over Phoenix Rising FC in the Mobile Mini Sun Cup in front of 5,060 fans at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex.

Phoenix Rising opened the scoring in the fifth minute when midfielder Devin Vega played a through ball between two defenders to an onside Kevaughn Frater, who drove a shot over Tim Melia to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Sporting Kansas City would even the match in the 17th minute, when Ilie Sanchez stole a pass and took a shot, which was deflected by a Rising defender, and went past a diving Dallas Jaye to even the match at 1-1.

Sporting Kansas City would take a 2-1 lead in the 30th minute when Daniel Salloi would take a ball from Khiry Shelton and slot it home between Jaye’s legs.

Phoenix Rising will next play Feb. 24 against the fifth place team in the final day of the Mobile Mini Sun Cup at 2:45 p.m. at the Kino North Sports Complex in Tucson.
